Current trend of GI disorders in Indonesia: The management and prevention

The problems in Indonesia as one of developing countries are poor sanitation/hygiene, unhealthy/contaminated water and food ingestion, widespread illiteracy and poverty. Current Gastrointestinal disorders in Indonesia are infection, inflammation, autoimmune, neoplasma/malignancy etc. The health management achievement in Indonesia this year is done according 8 WHO-MDGs. From the pattern of 10 most frequent diseases in the outpatient clinic in Indonesian Hospitals year 2011, we found that diarrhea or gastroenteritis caused by specific infection was no 5 and dyspepsia was no 6. From the pattern of 10 top most frequent diseases in the in inpatient ward in Indonesian Hospitals in 2011, we found that diarrhea or gastroenteritis was no 1, typhoid/paratyphoid fever was no 3, and dyspepsia was no 5. Diarhea and gastroenteritis caused by specific infection(infective colitis) in 2006 was the third highest cause of death in the hospitals in Indonesia. The most frequent cause of chronic diarrhea is infection in Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital 2002. The most frequent of bacterial infection was Pathogenic E.coli and the most frequent cause of parasite infection was Entamoeba histolytica. From the data in Indonesia 2007-2008 we found that the most frequent tumor cases was in Yogyakarta and Middle of Java Island 8.66 - 9.06 %. The management of gastrointestinal disorders in Indonesia include increase public health, increase public gastrointestinal disorders awareness/education, Early/optimal diagnosis(screening), Optimal treatment etc. The prevention effort in Indonesia include keeping good hygiene and sanitation, health Education, maintain optimal nutrition/diet, probiotics(yogurt), vaccination, check up/screening.
