Hepatitis virus infection is a common cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Clinical features of HCC shows marked variance across geographical regions, ethnic groups, and hepatitis viruses. Along with recent advance in treatment for hepatitis C viral (HCV) infection, almost 100% of sustained HCV eradication has been achieved. However, HCC could develop even after achieving HCV eradication. Moreover, suppression of HCC development in patients with chronic hepatitis B is still limited even by nucleoside/nucleotide analogue. Recently, whole genome sequencing for HCC revealed candidates of driver genes and core pathway modules, which varied among ethnic groups and etiology of the background liver disease. Hereafter, systematic research and discussion for clinical, molecular, and genetic factors are required to elucidate the whole mechanism of hepatocarcinogenesis. In this international symposium, which aims at suppression of HCC, we discuss recent advances in clinical, molecular, and genetic findings in both the host and viral side.
