Hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV) are global public health problems. WHO has taken measures to combat these diseases since 2010 and is ramping up to take more action by setting ambitious goals through 2030. Our University has been designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre (WCC) for chronic hepatitis and liver cancer since April 2017. Our University collaborates with the WHO via the Western Pacific Region Office (WPRO) exchanging personnel and conducting scientific research with several institutions in China, Vietnam, and Mongolia. Our WCC activities are based on two terms of references (TORs): (1) to support WHO in reaching milestones for country-specific screening, care and treatment especially in the western pacific region; (2) to assist WHO in providing technical support, advice and training for chronic hepatitis and liver cancer management. In 2017, our activities were the following: 1) development of hepatitis training modules for health care workers based on WHO HBV and HCV guidelines, 2) participation in WHO field activities to review hepatitis care and treatment in Mongolia and Cambodia, 3) participation in training workshops as trainers for HBV and HCV screening, diagnosis and treatment in Thailand, 4) participation in several international conferences hosted by WHO. Japan has established effective strategies on viral hepatitis and Japanese medical professionals can introduce experiences on screening, care, treatment, and follow-up to other countries, even where there are differences in accessible resources and health systems. Japan and Our University will continue to contribute to global health issues related to viral hepatitis through our WCC activities and assistance to the WHO. |
