The global commitment to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) elimination targets was an ambitious and achievable step. In Korea, liver related death has been remarkably decreased since 1980 by successful control of viral hepatitis. Primary prevention for hepatitis B was the most successful achievement to control viral hepatitis B by reducing HBV carrier rate less than 3% in general population and less than 1% among young adults(age under 2o years). In addition, reimbursement policy for antiviral agents has been remarkably improved since 1998 when lamivudine was introduced for the first time. To control of HCC, national surveillance program was also launched. At present, the 5 survival rate of patients with HCC has been remarkably improved since 1990 from 10% to more than 30%. However, liver related death in middle aged man is still leading cause of death and liver cancer is the 2nd cause of cancer death in Korea. Korean liver society established and updated guideline for the management of liver cancer as well as viral hepatitis B and C. The remaining issue is the awareness of viral hepatitis and blind spots to diagnose viral hepatitis before progression to advanced liver disease such as such as self-employed persons To realize these goals, the hepatitis community knew that it would take collaboration and engagement with different groups, at different levels, in order turn momentum into real action. |
