Clinical Utility of Capsule Endoscopy and Enteroscopy in the Management of Gastrointestinal lymphomas
Yu-Ting Kuo
Division of Endoscopy of National Taiwan University Hospital
Gastrointestinal lymphomas represent up to 10% of gastrointestinal malignancies and about one third of non-Hodgkin lymphomas. The most prominent gastrointestinal lymphoma are mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. However, the gastrointestinal tract can be the site of rarer lymphoma subtypes as a primary or secondary localization. Due to their rarity and the multifaceted histology, their endoscopic behavior has been scantily evaluated and an endoscopic classification has also not been validated yet. However, capsule endoscopy or enteroscopy is emerging as a useful tool with prognostic and therapeutic implications. In our study, twelve consecutive patients were diagnosed with gastrointestinal lymphoma in National Taiwan University Hospital and the endoscopic finding was retrospectively collected for analysis during January 2018 to March 2021. In summary, T-cell lymphomas present mainly with ulcerative lesions, while B-cell lymphomas (follicular or mantle cell lymphomas) present as a duodenal mass or multiple polyposis. Plasma cell-related disorders localize to the gastrointestinal tract, either as a neoplastic mass or as an amyloid deposition.
