Aim: We reported the total tumor volume (TTV) of 100 ml was a significant cut off value for predicting overall survival (OS) of colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRLM) regarding hepatic resection, though, its usefulness for chemotherapy remains unclear. The present study evaluated the usefulness of TTV for chemotherapy. Methods: A retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent hepatic resection or chemotherapy for CRLM between 2008 and 2019 at our university were the subjects. The OS according to TTV for both treatments were evaluated. Results: The OS of hepatic resection with TTV ≥ 100 ml was significantly worse than that of TTV < 100 ml, whereas significant difference was not observed for chemotherapy according to TTV. Regarding OS of patients with TTV ≥ 100 ml, there was no significant difference between hepatic resection and chemotherapy (p = 0.721). Conclusion: TTV can be a predictive factor of OS for hepatic resection. Significant difference in OS was not found in TTV ≥ 100 ml, suggesting to be an indicator of chemotherapeutic intervention preceding hepatic resection for CRLM.
