Personal Statement

I have directed a pancreatic cancer early detection research lab since 1999. The goal of my research is to improve the outcome of patients with pancreatic cancer and those at risk of developing this disease. Much of our work is focused on translational research evaluating markers and marker technologies that can help screen patients with an increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer. I lead the Cancer of the Pancreas screening-5 (CAPS5) study. CAPS5 is a multi-center study evaluating the utility of pancreatic screening in different risk groups and evaluating circulating and other markers of pancreatic neoplasia in patients with a familial/inherited susceptibility to pancreatic cancer and those with pancreatic cancer and comparing marker performance in these patients to individuals with chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cysts, and normal pancreata. I maintain a large repository of specimens from cases and controls with and without pancreatic disease. I have been an NIH-funded investigator continuously since 2000. I have helped identify the main genetic alterations responsible for the progression of PanINs and IPMNs to invasive pancreatic cancer and some of the genes responsible for pancreatic cancer susceptibility. I have published over 350 peer-reviewed papers, over 100 as first or last author, almost all related to pancreatic cancer and have a Google h-index of 137. I am the PI of a Pancreatic Cancer Early Detection Consortium U01 grant that supports the CAPS multi-center and our early detection efforts.
