The indications for minimally invasive endoscopic interventions (i.e., 3rd space and endoluminal surgery) in the U.S. continues to expand, aided by devices such as endoscopic suturing devices, clips, novel overtubes, newer knives and retraction devices. In addition, there is growing clinical outcome data demonstrating the safety and efficacy of these minimally invasive interventions such as per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), gastric POEM, Zenker's POEM, diverticulotomy, endoscopic closure of mucosal and full-thickness defects, endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), and transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF). An overview of these procedures will be presented with an emphasis on newer novel devices and technologies that enable these procedures to be performed safely and effectively. |
