Vincenzo Mazzaferro MD PhD is Full Professor of Surgery at the University of Milan and Director of the GastroIntestinal Surgery and Liver Transplantation Unit at the National Cancer Institute of Milan, Italy.

He graduated cum laude at the University of Turin (Italy) and was trained and board certificated in General Surgery and in Oncology at the University of Milan (Italy) and in Liver Surgery and Transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh(USA).

Along the years, both in the USA and in Italy, he has developed several Successful Clinical and Experimental Projects in Liver Oncology and Transplantation and leaded Research Projects focused on innovative approaches in the treatment of liver diseases, particularly related to cancer.

He is the inventor of the so-called Milan Criteria: a set of Liver Transplantation Eligibility Guidelines adopted all over the world.

Through validated results and cutting-edge clinical researches he contributed to a large number of National and International Collaborations. For his scientific contribution to the advancement of surgical and medical oncology he was awarded by renowned scientific and professional societies such as the Italian Association of Cancer Research, the French Digestive Surgery Society (Société Française de Chirurgie Digestive), the American Association of Cancer Research, the European Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society, the European Association for the Study of the Liver. In 2019, for the first time for a surgeon, he was honoured with the EASL Recognition Award. Furthermore he has implemented the liver cancer clinical treatment guidelines.

He served as Associated Editor for high-profile medical Journals devoted to Surgery, Hepatology, Oncology and Transplantation.

Furthermore in 2021, he was also a member of the European Lancet Commission for Liver Diseases.

He was awarded by the Italian Ministry of Health for a University Excellence Research Project in the field of augmented reality for cancer surgical treatment.

His numerous research and clinical activities significantly impacted on modern Surgical Oncology Development.

He is a founding member of the International Liver Cancer Association (ILCA) and of the European and American Epatology, Surgery and Transplantology Societies.

He is the Head of a HPB Surgery, Upper G.I. and Liver Transplantation Unit counting about 900 complex hospitalizations per year. Most of the patients require surgical or medical treatment of digestive system cancers or pre-neoplastic conditions.

In 2020 he has been awarded with the Civic Award of the city of Milan (Ambrogino d’Oro) or his scientific achievements.

To the present day, he is the author of 525 publications for peer-reviewed international scientific journals (H-index:103, Source: Scopus).
