Professor Masatoshi Kudo, MD, PhD, graduated from Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto, Japan, and received his PhD in Medical Science in 1987. He completed his clinical fellowship at Kobe City General Hospital and subsequently undertook research fellowships at the University of California, Davis Medical Center (1987-1989) and Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine (1990-1992).

Since 1999, Professor Kudo has served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Kindai University Faculty of Medicine. He has also served as President of Kindai University Hospital since 2008 and Vice President and Executive Board Member of Kindai University since 2015.

Professor Kudo is internationally recognized as one of the leading authorities in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), liver imaging, and interventional oncology. He has authored more than 1,480 peer-reviewed international publications (total impact factor >12,500; over 100,000 citations; H-index 129) in addition to more than 1,000 domestic scientific papers. He has delivered over 600 invited lectures at major international scientific meetings.

He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of LIVER CANCER (Impact Factor 10.5). His professional leadership includes President of the Japan Association of Systemic Therapy for HCC (JAST-HCC) and President of the Japan Association of Contrast-enhanced Ultrasound Imaging in the Abdomen (JACUA). He is also an Executive Board Member and Director General of the Japan Liver Cancer Association (JLCA) and a member of the AASLD Education Committee.

Professor Kudo has previously served as President of the Japan Society of Ultrasonics in Medicine (2014-2020), the Asia-Pacific Primary Liver Cancer Expert Association (APPLE, 2015-2017), the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB, 2011-2013), and the Asian Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (AFSUMB, 2016-2018). He has also served as an Executive Board Member of the Japan Society of Hepatology and the International Liver Cancer Association (ILCA).

His contributions have been widely recognized. He was named a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in Clinical Medicine for six consecutive years (2019-2024) and was ranked among the world's top 0.05% of scholars by ScholarGPS, where he was recognized as the No. 1 scholar worldwide in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Professor Kudo has played a pivotal role in establishing evidence-based management of HCC and was the first author of the Japan Society of Hepatology Clinical Practice Guidelines for Hepatocellular Carcinoma, published in 2007, 2010, 2014, and the revised 2021 edition.
