I am currently the Chief Clinical Officer at University of Rochester Medicine. I also serve as the Sr. Vice President for Health System Strategy and the Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs. I was the Director of the University of Colorado Cancer Center and principal investigator of the University of Colorado Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG | P30CA046934) from 2018-2025. In addition, I served as Chair of the Department of Surgery from 2012-2025. In these roles, I oversaw clinical, research and teaching activities of approximately 276 members of the Cancer Center and 180 full-time faculty in the Department of Surgery. The total cancer-focused research portfolio held by Center members was approximately $80 million per year and in the Department of Surgery was approximately $15 million per year. I was recruited to CU in 2012 from Johns Hopkins University where I served as the Chief of the Surgical Oncology Division. I trained at JHU, the NIH (fellowship in Immunology and Clinical Pharmacology), and Memorial Sloan Kettering prior to joining the faculty at JHU in 1999. Throughout my career, I have mentored numerous post-doctoral fellows on K12, T32, and other grants, many of whom have gone on to successful academic careers at top universities. My own research has focused on immunologic approaches to cancer therapies, as well as hepatobiliary neoplasms, and I have published >425 peer-reviewed manuscripts (>75,000 citations, H-index 126); >30 book chapters and served as PI or co-PI of >40 clinical trials. I developed a pre-clinical model for cancer vaccines and co-invented a live-attenuated Listeria monocytogenes strategy whereby neoantigens can be inserted into the Listeria genome to target an immune response; this R01-funded approach (PI: Schulick) was successfully commercialized and placed in phase I/II clinical trials (NCT03189030, NCT01417000, NCT01675765) at JHU, Colorado, and multiple other centers. I am also co-inventor of other novel strategies licensed to Top Alliance Biosciences and Dynamicure. I serve/have served on the Editorial Board, or Deputy/Associate editor, of 7 journals. I have also been involved in international efforts in cancer research/treatment. I was on the Board of Directors of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network from 2021-2025.
