Dr. Bo Shen is a clinician, physician-scientist, educator, and author. He is the Edelman-Jarislowsky Professor of Surgical Sciences, Professor of Medicine and Surgical Sciences (in Surgery), Vice-Chair for Innovation of Departments of Medicine and Surgery, Director of Interventional IBD Center, Medical Director of IBD Center, and Co-director of the Global Integrated Center for Colorectal Surgery and IBD Interventional Endoscopy at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center/NewYork- Presbyterian Hospital, New York, NY. Before he joined Columbia University in 2019, he had a long tenure as the Ed and Joey Story Endowed Chair and Professor of Medicine of Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, Section Head of IBD, Department of Gastroenterology/Hepatology, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH. He established the subspecialty Pouchitis Clinic at the Cleveland Clinic in 2002, the first and largest of its kind globally. He is also credited with the establishment of the first endoscopy unit specializing in the treatment of IBD and colorectal surgery complications in the world. He also established the first Interventional IBD Fellowship in the US. He is the founder of the Global Interventional IBD Group; founding chair of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy's (ASGE) Special Interest Group of Interventional IBD; and the inaugural President of the Chinese American Gastroenterology Association. Dr. Shen has conducted numerous clinical and translational research projects in IBD, endoscopy, and pouch disorders, and his research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), Broad Foundation, Crohn's and Colitis Foundation (CCF), American Society of Colorectal Surgeons, and philanthropic funds. He lectures extensively in the US and abroad. He has published more than 640 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals, including NEJM, Science, Nat Immunol, Nat Rev Gastroenterol Hepatol, PNAS, Gastroenterology, Lancet Gastroenterol Hepatol, and Gut. He led the development of a series of consensus guidelines in the endoscopic management of IBD complications and ileal pouch disorders. He edited 5 reference books and co-edited 4 textbooks/reference books on IBD, pouch disorders, and interventional IBD. He has been a visiting professor/guest professor in 50 leading academic institutions in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, the Czech Republic, India, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Korea, Spain, Serbia, Colombia, Turkey, the Philippines, and the US. Dr. Shen is a grant reviewer for the NIH, ACG, CCF, and Broad Foundation. Dr. Shen has served on editorial boards in major professional journals and the advisory board for the Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Shen holds a Fellowship in AGA, ACG, and ASGE. Dr. Shen has won numerous awards, notably the 2025 Crohn's Colitis Roundation Suzanne Rosenthal Humanitarian Award, the 2023 AGA Distinguished Clinician (in Academic Practice) Award, Professor Emeritus Florida Digestive Disease Update, the Ed and Joey Story Endowed Chair, the Edelman-Jarislowsky Professor of Surgical Sciences, the Physician of the Year Award and Senior Fellow Teacher of the Year Award from Department of Gastroenterology/Hepatology, the Cleveland Clinic, Physician/Physician Assistant Team of Year Award of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and the Premier Physician of Year Award from CCF Northeast Ohio Chapter.
