JDDW: Our Story and Milestones
I. Our founding & evolution into a GIA (1989-2010)
As the number of Japanese participants in the Digestive Disease Week held in the United States began to increase in the mid-1980s, people began to talk about the idea of organizing a Japanese edition of DDW.
| Keiichi Kawai, the Executive Board Director of the Japanese Society of Gastroenterology (JSGE; Organization of Japan Digestive Disease Week), carried out an opinion survey of the society members (by age group, institution, and specialty) about the organization of academic meetings (939 responses were received, for a response rate of 5%). The results showed that the primary concern among an overwhelming majority of the respondents was that there were too many meetings to attend in all fields and that to address this issue, many members were in favor of a joint organization of academic meetings, such as the DDW. These findings were reported to the regular meeting of the JSGE board (March 28, 1990). |

| Based on a DDW vision, a proposal was made within the JSGE to set up the DDW Liaison Committee. (Toshihiko Takeuchi, Executive Board Director, was placed in charge of this committee.) |
| The presidents of DDW-Japan's six member societies as well as those of the Japan Society of Hepatology (JSH), the Japanese Society of Gastroenterological Surgery (JSGS), and the Japanese Society of Digestion and Absorption (JSDA) organized the first DDW Delegates Conference (membership: Kaizo Ariga, Japanese Society of Gastroenterological Mass Survey (JSGMS); Yasuo Endo, JSH; Takeshi Ohara, JSGS; Takao Sakita, Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES); Toshio Sato, Japan Pancreas Society (JPS); Tadayoshi Takemoto, JSGE; Yoshinori Nao, JSDA; Toshimichi Nakayama, Japan Biliary Association (JBA); and Kyoichi Hamano, Japan Society of Coloproctology (JSCP)). Members elected from each society formed a working group, the DDW Study Committee (chaired by Toshihiko Takeuchi), to start detailed discussions. The Congress President meeting in 1993 approved a proposal for organizing DDW-Japan. |
| At the 4th DDW Delegates Conference on July 10, the organization's name was changed to "Japan Digestive Disease Joint Convention," with Takao Sakita inaugurated as President. In addition, the Steering Committee was renamed "Standing Committee," and rules for DDW-Japan's administration were laid down. Presidents of six societies with plans to host annual conferences in 1993 formed the yearly Steering Committee (membership: Yutaka Yoshida, JSGE; Rikiya Fujita, JGES; Hideo Harada, JPS; Tadahiro Takada, JBA; Susumu Kawamura, JSGMS; and Jyoji Utsunomiya, JSCP). |
| In September, the 1st DDW-Japan was held in Kobe. (The meetings were held in the spring from 1994 to 1998. Since 1999, they have been held in the fall). |
-1996 | The 2nd DDW-Japan in 1994 (Kobe) and the 3rd in 1995 (Yokohama) were organized by four societies, namely, JSGE, JGES, JPS and JBA. The 4th DDW-Japan in 1996 (Kobe) was organized by five societies with the addition of JSH. |
| After the launch of DDW-Japan, the Board of Directors (Chairman: Takao Sakita) and the Standing Committee (Chair: Tadashi Takeuchi) were in charge of the management of DDW-Japan. On November 21 of this year, however, the director system was abolished and an executive board system was set up in its place. Saburo Nakazawa was inaugurated as Chairman. The members of the Executive Board were Saburo Nakazawa (Chairman), Yasuyuki Arakawa, Jyo Ariyama, Saburo Oshiba, Tadashi Takeuchi, Kyuichi Tanikawa, Hirofumi Niwa, Shunji Futagawa, and Toshifumi Yoshio. The auditors were Itaru Ooi and Yukio Nagamachi. The following new committees were established: Planning Committee, Financial Committee, and Fund Raising Committee. |
| The Planning Committee of the Japan Digestive Disease Joint Convention drew up a new management policy to promote more efficient operation of DDW-Japan. After repeated deliberations at the Executive Board, it was approved that JSGE, JGES and JSH would jointly manage DDW-Japan. Regarding the annual conferences, it was agreed that societies that announce their participation in the conferences would jointly organize the conferences as before. |
| The Organization of DDW-Japan was launched. It consisted of the Executive Board (Saburo Nakazawa (Chairman), Yasuyuki Arakawa, Kyuichi Tanikawa, and Hirofumi Niwa), auditors (Itaru Ooi and Yukio Nagamachi), the General Scope Committee, the Financial Committee, and the Annual Meeting. The Steering Committee continued to play a central role in organizing the annual meetings as before. |
| The General Scope Committee took the initiative in drawing up the project plan for the 10th anniversary of DDW-Japan (with Kenji Fujiwara in charge). An international symposium was held to commemorate the 10th anniversary at DDW-Japan 2002 (Yokohama). |
| DDW-Japan was officially renamed "JDDW." There was a trademark issue, and the JDDW trademark was registered in January. Yutaka Atomi assumed the post of Chairman. Asia Pacific Digestive Week (APDW) 2007 (Kobe) was jointly held at JDDW 2007. The 2nd International Symposium on ALPD and Cirrhosis was also held. |
| In accordance with amendments to the regulations, committee names were changed (that of the General Planning Committee to "General Affairs Planning Board," that of the Financial Committee to "Financial Board," and that of the Annual Meeting to "Annual Meeting Board"), and the Public Relations Board was newly established. JSGS participated in JDDW for the first time at the 18th JDDW 2010 (Yokohama). It was approved that the official member societies would be JSGE, JGES, JSH and JSGS. It was also decided that the Executive Board would decide the future member societies. |
| Following the Executive Board's decision to approve filing for obtaining the status of a general incorporated association on September 9, 2008, the General Incorporated Association of Japan Digestive Disease Week was established on April 1, 2010. (Chairman of the Board of Directors: Yutaka Atomi; Executive Board members: Nobutoshi Ando, Michio Imawari, Michio Kaminishi, Kentaro Sugano, Kenichi Sugihara, Hajime Takikawa, and Hisao Tajiri; auditors: Norio Hayashi and Toshifumi Hibi; official members: Shuichi Kaneko, Koichiro Kumai, Hiromitsu Saisho, Iwao Sasaki, Kazuo Shirouzu, Tsutomu Chiba, Sumiko Nagoshi, Tetsuya Mine, Akio Yamaguchi, Osamu Yokosuka, Sumio Watanabe, and Mamoru Watanabe). In accordance with the articles of association and detailed regulations, the titles of the respective boards were changed. The Executive Board was renamed "Board of Directors," with Yutaka Atomi as Chairman. As for the standing boards, the name of the General Affairs Planning Board was changed to "General Affairs Planning Committee," that of the Financial Board was changed to "Financial Committee," that of the Annual Conference Board to "Annual Conference Committee," and that of the Public Relations Board to "Public Relations Committee." The COI Committee was also founded as a new standing committee. Moreover, the Committee for Women Physicians and Researchers of Gastroenterology in Japan was established as an extraordinary committee. It was decided that the Steering Committee would continue to play the main role in organizing the annual conferences. |
